How do repeating tasks work?
When you create a task you can specify many different ways for it to repeat once you complete it. When a task repeats, both the start-date and due-date will be moved forward by the specified amount. There are several simple options that you can quickly select from a drop down menu.
- Daily: It will repeat every day.
- Business Day: It will repeat every Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu and Friday.
- Weekend: It will repeat every Saturday and Sunday.
- Weekly: It will repeat on the same day of the week (eg., every friday).
- Biweekly: It will repeat on the same day, every other week (eg., every other friday).
- Monthly: It will repeat on the same day of the month (eg., every 16th).
- Bimonthly: It will repeat on the same day, every other month (eg., every other 16th).
- Quarterly: It will repeat on the same day, every 3 months (eg., March 16th would repeat on June 16th).
- Semiannually: It will repeat on the same day, every 6 months (eg., March 16th would repeat on Sept 16th).
- Yearly: It will repeat on the same day every year (eg., every March 16th).
- With Parent: This option is only available for subtasks.
If one of the above simple options does not suit your needs, you can use 3 different formats for advanced repeating
- Format 1: "Every X T". Where X is a number and T is a unit of time (day/week/month/year). Examples: Every 3 days, Every 1 month, Every 2 years, Every 16 weeks.
- Format 2: "On the X D of each month". Where X is a number or numerical word (first, second, last, etc) and D is a day of the week (Mon, Tue, Wed, etc). Examples: On the 1st monday of each month, On the last Fri of each month, On the 3rd Sat of each month.
- Format 3: "Every W". Where W is a day of the week (Mon, Tue, Wed, etc). Examples: Every Mon, Wed, Fri.
Additionally, you have the option of selecting whether you want the task to repeat from the due date or from the completion date.
- From Due-date: The task will be moved forward from the due-date, even if this due-date is overdue or in the future. For example, suppose you have a task that repeats weekly and is overdue by 6 days. When you complete this task, it will be moved forward from the due-date and the new due date willl be tomorrow.
- From Completion: The task will be moved forward from the current date. For example, suppose you have a task that repeats weekly and is overdue by 6 days. When you complete this task, it will be moved forward from today and the new due date will be in 7 days.
If you want to change how a task repeats, you will need to make the change to the current uncompleted task. Altering an old completed instance of this task will not work.
